HEAR FROM SOME CLIENTS

"I had tried various methods to try to calm him down, but nothing seemed to work.

From the very first session with JoAnna, I could tell that she had a deep understanding of dogs and their behavior. Through her patient and effective training methods, my dog has become a different animal. Most remarkable, he is able to coexist with people and things that are out around him on walks. JoAnna teaches you ways to feel more confident and comfortable so that your dog has the support and guidance it needs. My dog seems much more at ease now and is much more willing to explore his surroundings without fear or anxiety. I can’t thank you enough for the amazing work you’ve done with my dog and myself. I would highly recommend JoAnna to anyone looking for a skilled and compassionate dog trainer.”

“My husband, Steve and I have been working with JoAnna since August 2022.

With JoAnna’s knowledge and expertise, she has taught Steve and I how to help our Dalmatian, Archie, with window distractions, people entering the house, leash walking, entering and leaving a store, walking through a store, greeting people and leaving objects on the ground. With JoAnna’s help it has made walking with Archie more enjoyable in addition to ignoring window distractions and making improvements with leaving objects. Steve and I would like to thank JoAnna for everything and have truly enjoyed our time together. Thank you for all your help!”

“JoAnna came to my house several times to work on Auggie’s manners at home.

We worked on leash walking (he’s a pro now), greeting people at the door, and counter surfing. JoAnna also met me at Lowe’s to help his confidence in public places. With JoAnna’s help, Auggie passed his CGC test on the first try. He’s now a very confident boy and a joy to be around. Not only did she train Auggie, but she also trained me. I can’t thank JoAnna enough!”

PROCESS

Change the Emotion. Change the Behavior.

When you understand the “why” behind a behavior, you’ll be a better dog guardian and trainer. These relationship-centered insights will help you get to the root cause of an unwanted behavior, so that we can eradicate the negative feeling, adapt to your dog’s needs, and introduce an alternative behavior. I use rewards to associate good behaviors with good feelings to help strengthen the human-animal bond and build iron-clad trust.

From the very first intake call, I’ll begin charting a customized plan of action that will empower you to take your dog’s training in your own hands.

From the very first intake call, I’ll begin charting a customized plan of action that will empower you to take your dog’s training in your own hands.

Step 1

We’ll start with a free intake call to assess your needs and how I can help you.

Step 2

Soon after, we’ll have a more in-depth consultation call where we will begin to piece together immediate next steps.

Step 3

I’ll create your custom plan, designed to meet you and your dog where you are — it won’t work if it doesn’t work for you.

Step 4

From there, we’ll start in-person lessons to work together on topics specific to your plan. You’ll receive next steps and skills to work on without me.

Step 5

Follow up practice sessions are available as needed for supervised training and guided troubleshooting.

Step 6

You’ll soon take training into your own hands: My goal is for you to not need me anymore!

Pricing

HEAR FROM SOME CLIENTS

"JoAnna helped us understand Daisy’s stress cues and gave us instructions and the tools to help her manage her triggers.

We adopted Daisy, our Golden Retriever, when she was 15 months old. She came to us very reactive to other dogs. Since we have family members with dogs who would visit, we knew we needed some guidance to help Daisy be able to improve her behavior when encountering other dogs. JoAnna helped us understand Daisy’s stress cues and gave us instructions and the tools to help her manage her triggers. Her knowledge of animal behavior and her teaching skills were of great benefit for us. It was a positive learning experience for us and Daisy. We continue the work on our own with Daisy as she taught us and have seen real improvement with Daisy’s interactions with a visiting dog. Through JoAnna’s teachings we have learned to help Daisy manage other stressful situations as well."

Karen, Stan, and Daisy

"Having JoAnna as our trainer was an incredibly invaluable experience and we learned so much.

We started training for our dog, Nebby, who was showing reactivity on walks and in some other areas. Having JoAnna as our trainer was an incredibly invaluable experience and we learned so much. She always gave us constructive feedback and advice to ensure we were making progress. We gained plenty of skills and tools (e.g., reading our dog’s body language and counterconditioning) to help Nebby navigate her triggers. While our formal training sessions have ended, we still use everything we learned on a near-daily basis. We are so thankful for our time with JoAnna, and since we have gone through training, Nebby is less stressed and overall, more relaxed, which extends to us humans as well!”

Danielle, Arun, and Nebby

"Through our work with JoAnna, Claude has also improved his leash walking skills and reduced his reactivity to other people and dogs while walking.

We contacted JoAnna because we were having troubles with our Great Dane mix becoming too excited when guests came to the house and reacting to things on the TV. JoAnna gave us step by step instructions on how to address each of these issues, and she explained the behaviors and thinking behind the issues, so we were able to understand the importance of the various approaches. She provided us with successful strategies for greeting guests at the door, and Claude has gone from barking and cowering from guests to greeting them calmly and quietly. Through her training strategies with the TV reactivity, we have been able to completely eliminate that issue. Through our work with her, Claude has also improved his leash walking skills and reduced his reactivity to other people and dogs while walking. JoAnna is knowledgeable and compassionate. Her instructions were easy to follow, and she always made sure to demonstrate the tasks she was asking us to accomplish."

“It’s been great working with JoAnna to help train our Australian Bernedoodle puppy, Margot.

We initially contacted JoAnna to help us work on basic obedience and leash walking skills. She is very knowledgeable on dog behavior and taught us so much about how to interact with Margot. We’ve loved working with JoAnna!”

About Me

I’m JoAnna Rogowski, MS, KPA CTP, a Westfield, Indiana-based Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner with a master’s degree in Comparative Pathobiology (Animal Behavior and Welfare Concentration) and bachelor’s degree in Animal Sciences from Purdue University.

My passion for animal behavior began while working at a vet clinic in high school, which inspired me to make a career out of it. Between college and grad school, I took a five-year detour to teach high school science in South Texas through Teach For America.

My graduate research focused on the effect of caretaker interactions on dog welfare in commercial breeding kennels. During that time, I completed my Karen Pryor Academy certification and started seeing private training clients, specializing in fear and reactivity. In early 2024, I started working at Veterinary Behavior of Indiana where I’m thrilled to continue learning about all things behavior!

My husband Phil and I share our home with two dogs: Foxy (Chihuahua mix) and Maple (Red Heeler mix), and a cat, Booger. In our spare time, we enjoy going on hikes with the dogs, playing soccer, and trying out new restaurants.

My Journey with Maple

Maple, who we rescued as a puppy just before the COVID-19 lockdown, struggles with a number of challenges: fear, reactivity, and anxiety. Working with her has been a valuable case study in humane training and patience. She’s made amazing progress, but dog training is a lifetime thing and we’re in it for the long haul. If you’re struggling with your dog, I understand intimately what you’re going through — and I promise it gets better.

The dog you want is in your hands.
